What to bring

Your thumb. That is all.

Do not bring a horoscope. Do not tell anyone at the centre your date of birth, birth star or family names — not Guruji, not the assistants. If you wish, come from a phone number that is not connected to your name. Bring someone who understands Tamil if you like, though readings are translated into English, Malayalam and Hindi.

What happens at the centre

The reading, step by step

  1. Thumb impression only

Men give the right thumb, women the left. In person it is pressed on paper; online, you send a clear photo on WhatsApp. That is the only thing we take from you.

  2. No details, ever

We do not ask your name, date of birth, birth star, parents' names or anything about your life before the search. A reader who asks is not reading a leaf.

  3. The bundles are searched

Your thumb pattern belongs to a family of leaves. Guruji brings those bundles and reads each leaf's statements aloud, one by one.

  4. You answer only yes or no

"Are you the eldest child?" "Is your father's name of three letters?" Every wrong answer closes that leaf. Your name, your parents' names, your work — they come out of the leaf, never from you.

  5. Your leaf is found, or it is not

When every statement on a leaf is true, it is yours, and the reading begins from the General Kandam. If it is not found, the sitting ends there and nothing is charged.

Around the temple

Fake readers exist here too

Vaitheeswaran Koil is the home of the Nadi tradition, which is exactly why it attracts imitators — agents at the bus stand and the temple gate, "centres" that take your details on a form, readers who find a leaf for everyone. Use the same rules here as anywhere.

  • Authentic

Takes the thumb impression and nothing else. Asks only yes or no. Tells you your own name and your parents' names from the leaf before you have said them.

  • Warning sign

Asks for your date of birth, birth star, name or "a few details to find the leaf faster". Details you give are details that can be read back to you.

  • Authentic

No leaf found means no fee. Fees for each kandam are told plainly before the reading, and you pay after your leaf is confirmed.

  • Warning sign

Charges for the search itself, pushes "one more bundle" for a fee, or turns every reading into an expensive pooja or remedy package.

  • Authentic

Happy for you to contact from a number that is not linked to your name, and to say nothing about yourself. The leaf speaks; you listen.

  • Warning sign

Claims to be "the only genuine", "world famous" or "100% accurate". Fakes exist in Vaitheeswaran Koil itself and in every country where Tamils live.

Questions

Visiting Vaitheeswaran Koil

Is Nadi astrology true in Vaitheeswaran Koil?
Vaitheeswaran Koil is where the Nadi leaf tradition is kept, and there are authentic hereditary readers here. There are also many fakes near the temple. The test is simple: an authentic reader takes only your thumb impression, asks no details, and charges nothing if your leaf is not found.
Which day is good to visit Vaitheeswaran Koil for a Nadi reading?
Any day. The centre is open every day from 9 am to 6 pm IST. Tuesdays and the Tamil month of Karthigai are busy at the temple; message on WhatsApp the day before so your sitting is kept.
How do I reach Vaitheeswaran Koil?
By road: 1 hour from Kumbakonam, 20 minutes from Mayiladuthurai, about 5 hours from Chennai. By train: Vaitheeswaran Koil station is on the Mayiladuthurai–Chidambaram line; Mayiladuthurai Junction is the main stop. Nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli (about 3 hours).
How long does a reading take?
Finding the leaf usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on how many bundles match your thumb. The General Kandam reading itself is about an hour. Keep a half day.
Can my family get readings on the same day?
Yes. Each person gives their own thumb impression and their own leaf is searched. Tell us how many people are coming when you message.
